Matt has been a trial attorney since graduating from the Georgetown University Law
Center in 1984. (While at Georgetown, he served as associate editor of the Georgetown
Law Journal.) He began his law practice with a commercial litigation firm in Helena,
Montana. For many years, he was a federal prosecutor with the United States Attorney’s
Office in Phoenix, Arizona, where eventually he was appointed Deputy Chief for the
Criminal Division. He successfully tried numerous jury trials in federal court involving
multiple jurisdictions and multiple parties. In 1996, he was awarded the Director’s
Award for Superior Performance from the Attorney General of the United States. He
was a speaker on federal trial practice at many Department of Justice seminars.
In 1998, he returned to practice law in his hometown, Omaha. Since then, he has
practiced primarily in the areas of commercial litigation, trucking and personal
injury litigation, and white-collar defense. His practice since 1998 has included
the successful defense of trucking companies in numerous lawsuits in Nebraska and
Iowa, the successful representation in a six-state area of a large regional bank,
and the successful representation of a Fortune 100 company in several major lawsuits,
including a grand jury investigation of alleged environmental crimes. He is admitted
to practice in the federal and state courts in Nebraska and Iowa, as well as United
States Courts of Appeals for the Eighth and Ninth Circuits. He is a member of the
Trucking Industry Defense Association (TIDA), the Defense Research Institute, the
Nebraska Trucking Association and the Transportation Lawyers Association. In 2009,
Matt was recognized as a “Super Lawyer” for Nebraska and Iowa.
